A 19-year-old teenager has been sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum term of 17 years, for deliberately causing the death of a mother of three outside a bar. Kian Bateman, who was intoxicated with nitrous oxide, struck Shelley Davies, 38, with his car during a confrontation outside the Cardiff venue.
After a night at the 4th Glamorgan Home Guard Club, attending a General Levy gig with friends, Bateman returned to the bar when he couldn’t find his girlfriend at home. Witnessing a heated situation outside with his brother involved, Bateman drove his mother’s car into the group, fatally hitting Ms. Davies and injuring her partner, David Bratcher.
Following a trial at Cardiff Crown Court, Bateman was convicted of murder and causing grievous bodily harm. The court disclosed that Bateman, while under the influence of nitrous oxide, ran over Ms. Davies and Mr. Bratcher intentionally. Despite claiming he did not see Ms. Davies on the road and did not intend to harm her, the court found him guilty of her murder.
Described as a “force of nature” in court, Ms. Davies was remembered by her family as a dedicated Reiki healer aiding those battling addiction. Bateman, who admitted to causing death and injury by dangerous driving, expressed remorse for his actions. Apart from the prison term, he was banned from driving for over two decades and required to undergo an extended driving test.
The Crown Prosecution Service emphasized that the deliberate use of the car as a weapon resulted in tragic consequences, leading to the loss of Ms. Davies’ life and injuries to others. Detective Superintendent Mark O’Shea of South Wales Police extended condolences to Ms. Davies’ family and thanked the community and witnesses involved in the investigation.
