Urgent Recall: Metal and Plastic Found in PEDIGREE Dog Food

Dog owners are being advised to contact their veterinarian if they have fed their dogs a popular brand of dog food following an urgent recall notice. Mars Petcare has issued a recall for two batches of PEDIGREE® Can High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck flavored dog food due to potential contamination with foreign materials such as metal and plastic. According to Mars, these batches did not meet their strict safety and quality standards.

A Mars spokesperson mentioned that despite sending the recalled products for destruction through a third-party vendor as part of their quality control process, the products were found to have been fraudulently diverted and sold in the United States market. The presence of sharp foreign materials in the cans poses a risk to dogs, including potential choking hazards, lacerations, or gastrointestinal blockages.

Consumers who have fed the recalled product to their dogs are advised to contact their veterinarian. Mars Petcare US is collaborating with authorities to investigate how the contaminated goods entered the market, as they were initially deemed unsuitable for sale. The spokesperson emphasized their commitment to pet safety and assisting consumers in identifying and removing the affected products from use, noting no reports of pet illness or injury associated with the recalled batches.

The recall specifically pertains to two lot codes of the product sold in the United States. Individuals who have purchased the canned dog food are urged not to feed it to their pets and can reach out to PEDIGREE for a replacement product. No other PEDIGREE or Mars Petcare US, Inc. products are impacted by the recall issued by the US Food and Drug Administration.
