“21-Year-Old Driver Sentenced for Fatal Kent Crash”

A 21-year-old driver, Rosie Hanson, received a suspended 16-month prison sentence for causing the death of Ryan Phillips due to careless driving. The incident occurred on January 17, 2024, as Phillips and his girlfriend were walking along Marine Parade in Sheerness, Kent. Hanson’s speeding VW Golf struck them, resulting in fatal injuries to Phillips.

Prosecutors revealed that Hanson was driving well above the speed limit, between 54 to 68mph, before the accident. She claimed she swerved to avoid hitting an animal, leading to the tragic collision. The court noted that Hanson’s reckless driving at excessive speeds caused her to lose control of the vehicle, ultimately resulting in the fatal accident.

The judge, Julian Smith, emphasized the seriousness of Hanson’s actions, noting that her speeding to deliver pizzas was irresponsible. Hanson was also found guilty of driving uninsured for her second job. Despite the tragic outcome, the judge acknowledged Hanson’s young age at the time of the incident and expressed hope for her rehabilitation, deeming her a low risk for re-offending.

Statements from Phillips’ loved ones painted a picture of a kind-hearted and promising individual whose life was cut short. The devastating loss of Phillips was deeply felt by his family and friends, with his mother expressing ongoing grief and disbelief over the tragic event. Hanson, in a letter read in court, expressed profound remorse and extended her heartfelt apologies to Phillips’ family. She was sentenced to unpaid work hours, a driving ban, and mandatory completion of an extended driving test.
