A jail in North Carolina experienced turmoil today when inmates took control of parts of the facility after overpowering correctional staff.
During the incident at the Bertie-Martin Regional Detention Center in Windsor, three guards and 88 inmates were present. Law enforcement agencies, including local, state, and federal authorities, responded promptly when the takeover commenced around 5 am, according to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
The inmates managed to capture two guards while the third guard successfully escaped. Negotiations resulted in the release of the two guards and 80 inmates, leaving only eight inmates inside the facility, as confirmed by Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin.
After hours of the prison siege, law enforcement officers entered the facility and regained control, bringing the situation to an end. By early afternoon, the Bureau of Investigation and the FBI declared that the facility had been cleared, ensuring the safety and well-being of all inmates and staff, with necessary medical treatment provided to those injured.
The facility will undergo security assessment as inmates are transferred to alternative facilities. Located approximately 120 miles east of Raleigh, Windsor became the center of attention due to this incident. Sheriff Ruffin mentioned that the two released guards are receiving medical attention, although details about their injuries remain undisclosed, emphasizing that there was no danger to the public.
The circumstances surrounding why only three guards were overseeing the jail during the takeover have not been addressed by authorities. Sheriff Ruffin also did not provide details on the cause of the incident, stating that information will be disclosed to the public when appropriate.
