Reckless Driver Sentenced to Prison for Teen’s Death

A tragic incident occurred on the M65 motorway when a reckless driver crashed his car into the central reservation at speeds exceeding 100mph, resulting in the death of a teenage girl. Demi-Leigh Davies, 17, sustained fatal injuries in the collision. The driver, Leon Callaghan, 19, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to five years and three months in prison.

The judge condemned Callaghan’s reckless actions, stating that his choice to drive at such excessive speeds led to the tragic outcome. Demi-Leigh’s mother expressed her profound loss, describing her daughter as a vibrant young woman with a promising future. The court heard that Callaghan, at the time of the crash, had shown little remorse and attempted to shift blame onto external factors.

The crash, which occurred near Burnley, Lancashire, involved two other young women who sustained serious injuries but survived. Callaghan, who was driving the vehicle at speeds well above the legal limit, lost control of the car, causing it to collide with the central reservation and roll multiple times before coming to a stop. The impact resulted in catastrophic injuries to Demi-Leigh, leading to her untimely death.

Despite Callaghan’s claims of losing consciousness while driving, the court found him responsible for the fatal crash. His inadequate remorse and lack of accountability for his actions were highlighted during the legal proceedings. The judge emphasized the severity of the situation, underscoring the irreversible consequences of Callaghan’s reckless behavior.

Demi-Leigh’s family expressed their enduring grief over the loss of their daughter, emphasizing the profound impact her death has had on their lives. Callaghan, now a parent himself, was handed a substantial prison sentence and a lengthy driving ban, with the requirement to pass a re-test before regaining his driving privileges. Detective Constable Olivia Maidment of Lancashire Police acknowledged the devastating loss and hoped that the sentence would bring some semblance of justice to Demi-Leigh’s family and loved ones.
