A fatal train collision near Bedford involving two East Midlands Railway services led to the death of train driver Shaun Burton, 60, and injuries to over 100 passengers. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch reported that Mr. Burton’s train passed a red signal just before the crash. Following a fault in the Automatic Warning System, the Nottingham to London service unexpectedly stopped on the Up Fast line, prompting the signal behind it to turn red for safety. Meanwhile, the Corby to London service passed caution signals before encountering the red signal at WH154 and colliding with the stationary Nottingham train. The incident left 162 people injured, with 53 still in hospital, including eight in critical condition. The RAIB is conducting a thorough investigation into the events leading up to the crash, the train safety systems’ performance, and the circumstances surrounding the train’s stoppage on the track.
