A young boy, aged three, has been urgently taken to the hospital with severe injuries after an individual allegedly threw him into a crocodile enclosure at a zoo in Cambridgeshire. The incident occurred at Johnsons of Old Hurst Zoo in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, around 1:30 pm on Thursday, prompting a police response due to the child’s distressing injuries.
Subsequently, a 30-year-old man from Norfolk was apprehended on suspicion of attempted murder. The injured boy was swiftly transported to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, where he remains in critical but stable condition, receiving care from specialized officers assisting his family.
Authorities have confirmed that the man and the child are not acquainted, according to Cambridgeshire Constabulary. The zoo, Johnsons of Old Hurst, is a family-operated establishment that offers various amenities such as a butchery, farm shop, tea room, steakhouse, and a zoo housing over 100 animals, including crocodiles.
In response to the incident, Huntingdon MP Ben Obese-Jecty stated that the situation is being treated as a critical incident, emphasizing the ongoing criminal investigation and urging the public to avoid speculative discussions online. Detective Inspector Verity McCann mentioned that inquiries are being made with witnesses to gather more details about the incident at the zoo.
Johnson’s of Old Hurst expressed sympathy for the boy and his family, announcing the temporary closure of the Tropical House out of respect. The zoo’s operations, aside from the closed area, will continue as usual.
