An architect, Rex Heuermann, aged 62, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murders of eight women in a series of unresolved cases known as the Gilgo Beach killings. The crimes took place between 1993 and 2010, with the victims’ remains primarily discovered in marshland areas along the southern coast of Long Island, notably at Gilgo Beach.
Heuermann, after pleading guilty in April, appeared in court in Riverhead, New York, where he confessed to the murders of seven women, including Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Lynn Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, and Sandra Costilla. Additionally, he admitted to the killing of an eighth victim, Karen Vergata, whose murder was not specified in the charges. Ms. Vergata was presumed to be 34 years old when she went missing.
The investigation into the Gilgo Beach killings commenced in 2010 following the discovery of four sets of human remains along the beach. Through DNA analysis and other means, law enforcement identified most of the victims, many of whom were involved in sex work. The remains of four victims, known as the Gilgo Four, were found at Gilgo Beach, while others were discovered along Ocean Parkway and in the Hamptons.
The remains of the eighth victim, Ms. Vergata, were found in 1996 on Fire Island and near Gilgo Beach in 2011. During the sentencing, family members of the victims expressed their anguish and demanded justice. Jasmine Robinson, a cousin of one victim, condemned Heuermann for his actions, stating that no amount of punishment could undo the pain caused. Amanda Funderburg, the sister of another victim, confronted Heuermann, recounting a distressing phone call she received from him years ago. JoAnn Mack, the mother of a victim, emphasized that while justice had been served, nothing could replace what had been taken from the victims.
