Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway Receives Lung Transplant

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway has undergone a successful lung transplant surgery at a hospital in Norway. The princess, married to Crown Prince Haakon, has been fighting pulmonary fibrosis since 2018. Recently, she has been using an oxygen mask during public appearances to aid her breathing.

The Royal Family of Norway confirmed that the 52-year-old princess is recovering well post-surgery. Head of Thoracic Surgery at Oslo University Hospital, Arna Tiane, stated that the lung transplant has been successful and expressed gratitude to the medical team involved.

The Crown Princess will continue to be monitored at Rikshospitalet for several weeks for medication adjustments, treatment of any complications, and rehabilitation. The Pulmonology Department head at the hospital, Are Holm, explained that this is a standard procedure for post-transplant care.

In an official statement, the Norwegian Royal Family announced the successful lung transplant and conveyed the Crown Prince and Princess’s appreciation for the supportive messages received during this challenging time.

In related news, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, the couple’s daughter, has returned from studying in Australia to be with her mother due to her deteriorating health. Crown Prince Haakon mentioned that Princess Ingrid Alexandra intends to return to complete her studies in Australia but will stay in Oslo for the time being to support her mother.

The statement from the palace follows recent events where Mette-Marit’s son, Marius Borg Høiby, was sentenced to four years in prison for two counts of rape. The court found him guilty of assaulting two women, one at the Crown Prince’s estate in Skaugum in 2018 and another in Oslo in 2024, as well as mistreating an ex-girlfriend.
