Keir Starmer is set to introduce AI tools dubbed as “Jobcentre in your pocket” to assist individuals in securing employment. The Prime Minister will emphasize the importance of leveraging new technology to benefit all, not just a select few, in an upcoming speech. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has developed an AI assistant to offer around-the-clock guidance for job seekers, aiding in CV creation, job hunting, and career advancement.
Recent data revealing over a million young individuals aged 16 to 24 not engaged in education, employment, or training (Neet) has sparked concerns about worsening conditions. Starmer stated that while technology holds tremendous potential to transform lives, it is crucial to ensure that the benefits are accessible to all, not just a privileged minority. The government aims to empower British businesses to drive growth, create more jobs, and foster inclusive communities through technological advancements.
The innovative AI tools, scheduled for a three-month trial launch, will provide personalized job and career advice, functioning as a portable Jobcentre. Over 50 AI firms have submitted proposals to develop AI tutoring tools to support young people, with implementation slated to begin in Autumn 2027, benefiting nearly half a million children receiving free school meals. Furthermore, an AI “bootcamp scheme” will be introduced nationwide this summer to assist individuals at risk of unemployment and disengagement from education and training.
Business Secretary Peter Kyle has pledged to increase state investments in high-growth UK companies, aiming to support British innovation on a larger scale. Concerns raised by former cabinet member Alan Milburn about a potential “lost generation” in Britain, with projections of 1.25 million young individuals facing unemployment, training gaps, or educational deficiencies within the next five years, underscore the urgency of proactive measures. Notably, existing welfare and health systems tailored to young individuals are deemed inadequate, with a significant portion of the youth population falling under the Neet category, as per the latest Office for National Statistics report.
