President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Vladimir Putin’s Russia of intentionally targeting a nuclear storage facility at Chernobyl. Zelensky referred to the incident as “extremely vile.” The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that the strike damaged a fuel-reception building near a significant amount of nuclear material storage. Despite the attack, there was no increase in radiation levels recorded, as the building did not contain spent fuel at the time of the strike, according to Energoatom, Ukraine’s state atomic agency.
Zelensky condemned the Russian strike on the critical infrastructure facility, emphasizing the audacity of Russia’s actions. The International Atomic Energy Agency expressed deep concern over the incident. Additionally, a Russian drone strike in southeastern Ukraine resulted in the deaths of three individuals at a bus stop. In retaliation, a Ukrainian attack in Russia’s Kursk region led to casualties as well.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer hosted a meeting with Zelensky, along with the leaders of France and Germany, to discuss ongoing support for Ukraine. The gathering followed a significant Ukrainian drone strike targeting St Petersburg, Russia, showcasing Ukraine’s expanding capability to strike deep inside Russian territory. The attack in St Petersburg, occurring shortly after a prominent economic forum, dealt a blow to Putin’s attempts to minimize the conflict’s impact on Russian daily life.
Zelensky’s public message to Putin, the first since Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine in 2022, criticized Putin’s lengthy tenure in power and touched on the Russian leader’s age. In response to Putin’s refusal to meet, Ukrainian foreign minister Andrii Sybiha warned of escalating attacks on Russia, emphasizing that no area in Russia is safe from Ukrainian strikes and that the intensity of attacks will only increase.
Both sides have resorted to long-range strikes as the front line remains largely static due to drone interference. The ongoing conflict signals a heightened state of tension between Ukraine and Russia, with no immediate resolution in sight.
