A surfer who narrowly escaped a shark attack shared his harrowing experience and how he used a simple technique to evade the predator’s grasp. Alejo Santiñaque, 20, recounted the terrifying moment when a shark bit his foot while waiting for a wave at Red Cliff in Morton Bay, Queensland, Australia. Despite being pulled underwater and entangled in his surfboard leash, Alejo managed to break free from the shark’s hold by swiftly employing a self-defense tactic.
In a Facebook post, Alejo described the rapid sequence of events, recalling the intense struggle to fend off the shark. After kicking the shark forcefully to release its grip, the leash separated from the board due to the force of the pull, allowing Alejo to swim towards safety with adrenaline-fueled urgency. Grateful for his friends’ prompt assistance upon reaching the shore, Alejo credited their quick actions in tending to his wounds and applying a tourniquet until medical help arrived.
Reflecting on the incident, Alejo acknowledged his fortune in surviving the shark bite, which inflicted injuries to his skin, muscle, and tendons. While expressing gratitude for avoiding severe arterial damage, he emphasized understanding and respect for sharks as essential components of the ocean ecosystem. Despite the traumatic experience, Alejo maintained his love for the ocean and underscored the importance of cherishing life, friendship, and the support received during the crisis.
The shark encounter occurred just days before a tragic incident in Western Australia, where a 35-year-old diver lost his life in a shark attack while spearfishing near Michaelmas Island. Despite efforts by his companions to resuscitate him, the victim succumbed to the injuries inflicted by the suspected 4.5m (14.8ft) shark, marking a sobering reminder of the risks inherent in ocean activities.
