David Lammy confronted JD Vance, the US Vice President, regarding his criticism of the UK in response to Henry Nowak’s death, asserting that Vance’s stance was incorrect.
The Deputy Prime Minister disclosed that he had conversed with Mr. Vance on Saturday, countering Vance’s attribution of the tragedy to mass migration. Lammy emphasized that Henry’s death was unrelated to mass migration and highlighted ongoing investigations into the police handling of the situation.
Vance’s statement on Friday, blaming the “politics of self-hatred and the mass invasion of migrants” for Henry’s death, led to public outrage after video footage revealed Henry’s desperate plea for help being disregarded by the authorities.
Vickrum Digwa, the British-born perpetrator, misled the police by falsely claiming racial abuse, complicating the investigation further. Lammy clarified during an interview that discussions with Vance touched upon the effective functioning of the democratic process and the progress in handling the case. He reiterated that the incident was not linked to mass migration and emphasized that murder rates in the UK were declining.
When asked about his interaction with Vance, Lammy described it as courteous due to their existing relationship, although he made it clear that he disagreed with Vance’s assertions and presented factual information to him.
Lammy elaborated on Vance’s concern for Western values and his perception of threats to those values in both the US and Europe. Despite their differing views, the conversation ended amicably with plans to meet again.
Lammy urged Vance to avoid inflammatory tweets out of respect for the wishes of the Nowak family and to prevent further division and animosity. Keir Starmer also emphasized the importance of unity over division in honoring Henry’s legacy after meeting with the family.
The Prime Minister expressed his deep empathy for Henry’s family and pledged to ensure that lessons are learned from the tragic incident. The investigation into Hampshire Police’s handling of the case is ongoing, with further scrutiny on the officers’ response to Henry’s plea for help.
Nigel Farage’s remarks on the incident and Vance’s subsequent statements were critiqued for their divisive nature. Lammy stressed the importance of avoiding rhetoric that could fuel further discord and emphasized the need for a constructive approach to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
