“Subpostmaster Wins £2M Compensation in Horizon Scandal”

After a decade-long battle to clear his name, a subpostmaster has successfully obtained £2 million in compensation following the Horizon scandal. Accused in 2015 of embezzling £89,000 from the Post Office he managed with his family, the individual faced immense pressure after a computer error falsely indicated financial discrepancies in his records.

Struggling to repay the alleged shortfall and fearing the loss of his home, the subpostmaster, who chose to remain anonymous, endured months of uncertainty and distress. It was only upon joining Sir Alan Bates’ campaign for justice that he realized the extent of the issue affecting numerous sub-postmasters.

Now, having finally received his compensation, the shop owner emphasized the importance of holding accountable those responsible for the unjust prosecution of over 900 sub-postmasters due to erroneous information from the Horizon system.

Expressing his relief at the resolution, the subpostmaster stressed, “I didn’t take a single penny, yet I faced suspension and interrogation. While I am grateful for the justice served and the compensation received, the ongoing criminal investigation must proceed to ensure accountability.”

Operating a post office within his shop in Acton, West London, the subpostmaster adopted the Horizon program in 2015 following a Post Office system upgrade. However, discrepancies emerged, leading to accusations of significant cash theft, subsequent audits, and demands for repayment of the alleged sum.

The subpostmaster recounted facing threats, losing his secondary job due to the investigation’s strain, and enduring a traumatic arrest by authorities. The ordeal left him financially drained, socially isolated, and emotionally shattered.

After engaging legal support and rejecting an initial compensation offer of £75,000, the subpostmaster, with the assistance of forensic accountants, successfully negotiated a settlement of £2 million. This outcome highlights the need for comprehensive evaluation of losses suffered by sub-postmasters affected by the Horizon scandal.

While the path to justice has been arduous, the subpostmaster’s case serves as a beacon of hope for others seeking rightful compensation. The need for a swift resolution to the criminal investigation into the Horizon scandal was underscored as delays loom, potentially prolonging the quest for justice for all victims impacted by the faulty system.

The Post Office and the Government expressed regret over the distress caused by the scandal and reiterated their commitment to expeditiously addressing compensation claims. With over £1.5 billion already disbursed to thousands of postmasters, efforts to rectify the injustices of the Horizon scandal remain a top priority.
