UK Teen’s Anti-Money Laundering Database Sparks Russian Backlash

A teenager from the UK has been targeted by the Russian government. Alexander Browder, a sixth form student, has created a database documenting illicit cryptocurrency transactions, specifically those used by Russia to evade Western sanctions. Due to his exposure of Russian money laundering activities, he has been barred from visiting Russia. His database, launched at the Houses of Parliament, has garnered global attention.

In response, Russia’s foreign ministry imposed “personal sanctions” on Alexander, accusing him of spreading defamatory information about Russian policies. Unfazed by the ban, Alexander expressed pride in his work, stating that the sanction validates the impact of his efforts. He emphasized the necessity of cutting off Russia’s cryptocurrency supply to limit Putin’s financial resources.

Alexander’s father, Bill Browder, criticized Russia’s action, highlighting the unusual nature of sanctioning a high school student. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reached out to Vladimir Putin for a face-to-face meeting to discuss ending the ongoing conflict. Zelensky hinted at potential internal challenges in Russia, pointing out the toll the war has taken on Russian soldiers and suggesting that change might be imminent.

The Ukrainian leader emphasized the importance of direct engagement with Putin to resolve the conflict, underscoring concerns for Ukrainian citizens and the need for a peaceful resolution. He warned Putin about the growing discontent within Russia and urged him to consider the consequences of prolonging the war.
