UK Braces for Summer Heatwaves Amid Rising Temperatures

The UK is set to experience a potential heatwave in the upcoming months, according to the latest forecast from the Met Office. Following the scorching heatwave in May, where temperatures soared to a record-breaking 35.1C in London, the Met Office predicts a resurgence in temperatures above 30C in the middle of this month. The long-range outlook for June, July, and August indicates a higher likelihood of hot conditions this summer, although average conditions remain a possibility.

The forecast attributes the increasing probability of heatwaves to the consistent trend of rising UK temperatures associated with global climate change. MeteoGroup, a provider of weather data to BBC Weather, also anticipates more heatwaves with potential notable high temperature spikes. Forecasters from MeteoGroup suggest above-average temperatures throughout June, July, and August, with significant heat bursts expected across the UK and Europe.

Looking ahead, the Met Office’s forecast for June 8 to June 17 predicts showers or prolonged periods of rain, particularly in the north-west, while the south-east is likely to remain drier. Towards the end of this period, higher pressure and settled conditions may prevail, especially in the south, with temperatures expected to be near normal.

For the period from June 18 to July 2, the Met Office anticipates drier conditions at the start, thanks to high pressure, although showers may still occur. Light winds are expected, with temperatures potentially above normal. Towards the end of June, low pressure could bring heavy showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the south, where hotter temperatures may also emerge.
