Teenage Girl Dies in Yorkshire River Tragedy

Efforts were made by members of the public to rescue a 13-year-old girl who went missing in a river in Yorkshire on Sunday. The police later expressed gratitude to those who responded to help.

Despite the brave attempts, the young girl sadly passed away in the hospital after being retrieved from the water in Skipton, North Yorkshire. She was airlifted to the hospital by an air ambulance following the emergency services’ arrival at the scene.

This unfortunate incident occurred amidst a series of open-water fatalities during the recent heatwave, making the teenager the 17th reported individual to have lost their life in open water across the UK.

North Yorkshire Police extended their appreciation to the public for their rescue efforts and expressed their condolences to the girl’s family during this distressing period.

A spokesperson from North Yorkshire Police stated: “Around 6:30 pm on Sunday, May 31, 2026, emergency services were summoned to the River Wharfe near Burnsall in the Skipton region after a 13-year-old girl was reported missing in the river.

“Shortly after, she was rescued from the water and transported to the hospital via air ambulance. Despite the efforts of the public and medical personnel on-site and at the hospital, she unfortunately did not survive.

“The identity of the girl cannot be disclosed at this time. We continue to stand in solidarity with her family during this difficult time and request that the privacy of the family be respected by the public and the media to allow them to mourn peacefully. We are grateful to the public members who assisted at the scene.”
