Nicola Sturgeon fought back tears as she revealed a gift from her estranged husband, who admitted to embezzling more than £400,000 from the SNP.
The former Scottish First Minister expressed feeling unjustly penalized for crimes she did not commit and refused to apologize for Peter Murrell’s misconduct. Sturgeon addressed the situation following Murrell’s confession to embezzling the significant sum, an act that led to their divorce announcement in January 2025.
Murrell, the former SNP chief executive from 2001 to 2023, spent the embezzled funds on various items, including a motorhome, luxury watches, and pens, among other purchases such as everyday essentials like hand cream and curry sauce. Sturgeon, during an interview with BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, emphasized her lack of responsibility for her ex-husband’s actions and her determination not to take blame for his wrongdoing.
Reflecting on a poignant moment, Sturgeon recounted how Murrell gifted her a £400 Shetland necklace purchased with embezzled money. She shared her emotional attachment to the necklace and the distress caused by realizing the tainted origins of gifts she had cherished.
Expressing her deep dismay towards Murrell, Sturgeon stated that her feelings of anger fell short of capturing the extent of her emotions. She highlighted the personal betrayal and public scrutiny she faced due to his actions, emphasizing the profound impact on her well-being and reputation.
