Alex, the son of Rachel Nickell, has recounted the traumatic experience of witnessing his mother’s murder as a child and how it has profoundly impacted his life. Rachel was tragically killed by serial killer Robert Napper while walking with her son Alex on Wimbledon Common in 1992.
Following the murder, Colin Stagg, a local dog walker, was wrongly arrested due to resemblance to a suspect photofit. However, the case against him collapsed, exposing police tactics. Napper was eventually convicted 16 years later through DNA evidence and is now detained at Broadmoor psychiatric hospital.
In addition to Rachel’s death, Napper is suspected of multiple attacks in southeast London. After the tragedy, Rachel’s son Alex and his father André relocated to France and later Spain to start anew. Alex recently shared his recollection of the attack, including Napper pulling a knife and stabbing his mother.
Despite forgiving his mother’s killer, Alex has criticized the police for their failures. Two upcoming TV productions, a documentary and a series, will shed light on Rachel Nickell’s case, with Alex and André Hanscombe playing a role in the storytelling.
