Kent Residents Outraged as Water Supply Disruptions Worsen

Kent residents are furious as severe water supply disruptions hit the region during a scorching heatwave. Thousands of customers faced water shortages, with some areas experiencing complete water outages and others dealing with intermittent supply or low pressure. The situation forced businesses to shut down in Whitstable, Tankerton, Ashford, and surrounding regions.

By Thursday, over 22,000 people were affected by water supply issues, and there were warnings that the problems could persist into the weekend. Locals expressed their anger towards South East Water, the major water supplier in the area, for the inadequate response to the crisis.

Pat Prestage, a resident of Whitstable, voiced her frustration after her household water supply suddenly went off, leaving her feeling angry and helpless. The 67-year-old and her husband faced difficulties accessing emergency water services due to the system’s failures, especially impacting Pat, who has a disability making her vulnerable during such events.

Criticism was also directed at South East Water for suggesting that customers reduce their water usage to assist those facing shortages, with Pat and her husband highlighting the company’s profit-driven approach rather than focusing on service reliability and infrastructure investment.

Another elderly customer, a 90-year-old living between Herne Bay and Whitstable, described the situation as “disgusting” and unacceptable, emphasizing the challenges faced by vulnerable individuals during such disruptions.

South East Water assured customers that efforts were underway to address the issues, with some residents already seeing their water supply restored. However, intermittent supply was expected to continue for many over the weekend, particularly in areas like Whitstable and Cranbrook where water access remained critical.

Residents in affected regions were urged to limit water usage to essential activities like drinking, cooking, and cleaning until the problems were fully resolved.
