A body was discovered during the search for a teenager who had gone missing while swimming in a section of open water in Cheshire.
Specialist divers and a helicopter team were instrumental in retrieving the body of the unidentified 17-year-old, who was last sighted swimming in Pickmere Lake in Northwich on Tuesday.
Although formal identification is pending, authorities have strong indications that the recovered body is that of the missing teenager.
Chief Inspector Jamie Lewis expressed condolences, stating, “This young individual had a promising future ahead. Our hearts and thoughts are with the teenager’s family, friends, and acquaintances during this challenging period.”
He further highlighted the risks associated with swimming in open water, particularly emphasizing the dangers that can arise unexpectedly, such as strong currents, hidden obstacles, and mud banks.
The authorities confirmed that the incident is not considered suspicious.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service reported their involvement in the search operation at Pickmere Lake, where firefighters utilized a rescue boat and water rescue personnel to aid in the search for the missing individual.
This tragic event marks the sixth occurrence this week of teenagers drowning in bodies of water after swimming during a severe heatwave.
