“UK Travelers Face Airport Chaos in Europe Over New Border Checks”

Passengers from the UK traveling to countries in Europe are facing extensive delays at airports due to new border checks, leading to missed flights and frustration among travelers. The Schengen zone, comprising 29 European countries, has witnessed overcrowded terminals and long waits at passport control, turning what was supposed to be a leisurely trip into a stressful experience for many.

Individuals took to social media platforms like Facebook to express their grievances, with one user, Clarissa Ward, recounting her ordeal of waiting in an unprecedentedly long line, witnessing fellow passengers, including elderly individuals and families with young children, missing their connections and flights. Another passenger, Craig Hackett, shared his experience of missing his flight despite arriving early and encountering significant queues at the boarding gate.

The delays are a result of the implementation of the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) launched on October 12, 2025, requiring non-EU travelers, including UK citizens, to undergo fingerprint registration and photo capture when entering or leaving the Schengen area. The new checks aim to enhance border security and curb illegal migration, according to EU officials.

Airlines have voiced concerns over the disruptions caused by the new system, with calls for governments to suspend the EES to alleviate long queue times at airports. Ryanair, for instance, urged the Portuguese government to halt the EES until after the peak summer season to prevent excessive wait times at border control checkpoints in Portuguese airports.

The travel industry is grappling with the operational, economic, and environmental impacts of the delays, prompting calls for improved customer care and support for passengers facing challenges despite following procedures diligently. The situation highlights the need for a balance between security measures and ensuring smooth travel experiences for passengers within the Schengen zone.
