Ex-SNP Chief Misused Funds for £3K Coffee Machine

Former SNP chief executive, Peter Murrell, allegedly utilized misappropriated party funds for an extravagant spending spree that included a £3,200 high-end coffee machine, nearly £2,000 worth of umbrellas, and even a copy of his estranged wife Nicola Sturgeon’s book of speeches.

In January 2025, Sturgeon announced the end of her marriage with Murrell.

A detailed 126-page indictment against Murrell, aged 61, outlines numerous purchases prosecutors claim were financed through embezzled SNP money, shedding light on his lavish expenditure habits.

The purchases ranged from a motorhome, luxury domestic items, unique collector’s pieces, to pricey electronic devices. Notable acquisitions featured a Celestron NexStar computerized telescope priced at £1,199, along with accompanying accessories bought on the same day.

Reportedly, Murrell splurged on a Jura Giga 5 Cromo coffee machine for £3,231, designer pepper and salt grinders amounting to £2,618, and eight umbrellas costing almost £2,000.

Furthermore, the indictment itemizes expenses such as an oak library ladder for £943, a Royal Mint silver proof coin set for £625, and a model helicopter from Airbus for £550.

The spending spree also encompassed personal accessories and gifts, including designer manicure sets, a special edition Beatles fountain pen set, and high-priced “space pens.”

Entertainment-related purchases comprised boxsets of popular TV series like Borgen and The Killing, video games such as Grand Theft Auto V, and board games like Monopoly.

Murrell’s spending extended to hobbies and outdoor items like bird feeders, weather station equipment, rock climbing gear, and a bike tool kit. Other miscellaneous purchases included luxury birthday cards, kitchen gadgets, and household items.

The former SNP chief executive has confessed to embezzling over £400,000 from the party. Sturgeon asserts her lack of knowledge regarding the use of SNP funds for personal items, emphasizing their separate bank accounts and her limited access to Murrell’s financial records.

Sturgeon maintains her innocence, citing her clearance from any wrongdoing following a thorough investigation by Police Scotland.
