Ex-inmate exposes UK prison corruption

Former inmate Linton Weirich, known for a scandal involving a prison guard at HMP Wandsworth, has come forward to shed light on corruption within UK prisons.

In 2024, a video emerged showing Weirich engaging in sexual activity with prison officer Linda De Sousa Abreu, leading to an investigation by authorities.

Weirich, now 38 years old and a repeat offender since 2003, expressed concerns about the deteriorating discipline within prisons, attributing it to the influx of inexperienced young staff members. He highlighted the prevalence of corruption among prison staff, stating that many earn more from smuggling contraband than from their regular salaries.

In an interview with The Sun, Weirich disclosed that De Sousa Abreu had been involved in bringing in prohibited items, such as Nando’s and Chinese meals, for inmates at inflated prices. He regretted the viral video’s impact on his personal life and the distress it caused to his family.

Following the scandal, Weirich was transferred from HMP Wandsworth to HMP Swaleside, where he faced a violent attack while holding his infant child. De Sousa Abreu resigned from her position after the video surfaced and later admitted to misconduct, serving a brief jail term before being released with an electronic tag.

Weirich expressed a desire to move forward with his life and refrained from dwelling on De Sousa Abreu’s actions. When approached by The Sun at her residence, De Sousa Abreu denied the allegations, attributing the challenges in the prison system to understaffing.

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson emphasized the dedication of most prison staff members and highlighted measures being taken to combat corruption and enhance security within prisons.

The Mirror has reached out to the MOJ for additional comments.
