Two individuals in Europe have been identified as potential cases of a deadly virus in the last day. Both patients have exhibited symptoms such as high fever, nausea, and vomiting and have been promptly taken to the hospital for urgent medical care.
The suspected Ebola cases have emerged in northern Italy, where a 31-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman developed symptoms after returning from Uganda. This development comes amidst an ongoing Ebola outbreak in parts of Africa, primarily transmitted through contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person or animal.
The man suspected of carrying the virus hails from Bulgarograsso, while the woman is from Lurate Caccivio. Both had been engaged in humanitarian work in Uganda for three months before returning to Italy.
Both patients have been transferred to Sacco Hospital in Milan, with the woman potentially requiring intensive care. While they traveled to Uganda with their families, it is uncertain if their family members are also experiencing any symptoms.
Guido Bertolaso, the regional welfare minister of Lombardy, stated that seven Italian citizens, belonging to two different families, had returned from Uganda near the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda borders after a three-month stay. These individuals had been providing aid in challenging conditions.
Recent reports indicate that nearly 1,000 suspected Ebola cases have been documented since May 15, resulting in approximately 220 deaths.
Symptoms of Ebola, as explained by the NHS, may manifest between 2 and 21 days post-infection, encompassing sudden flu-like symptoms and other indicators. The health service advises individuals who have been to Ebola-affected regions or come into contact with those who have to promptly seek medical attention.
