Lindsey, the wife of Rob Burrow, is dedicated to assisting families in coping with grief. She mentioned that their family makes an effort to discuss him daily. The former Leeds Rhinos player passed away in June 2024 at 41 years old following a battle with motor neurone disease (MND) diagnosed in December 2019. Since then, Lindsey, aged 42, has been actively fundraising for his Foundation and supporting other families dealing with loss.
She is drawing attention to recent research conducted by the ‘Celebration Day’ charity revealing that over 50% of parents feel anxious about broaching the topic of death with their kids. The charity encourages individuals to commemorate and honor those who have shaped their lives on the last Monday of May.
In an interview with Sky News, Lindsey, now a single mother to their three children Macy, Maya, and Jackson, revealed, “We aim to discuss Rob every day.” Initially, she found discussing his passing with the children challenging, given the emotional toll on both herself and the kids.
Reflecting on her journey, Lindsey emphasized the importance of addressing grief and bereavement openly. She acknowledged the national curriculum’s inclusion of grief and bereavement education starting in September, with ‘finding the words’ packs being distributed to schools in partnership with Celebration Day.
Rob, a prominent advocate for MND awareness, played nearly 500 games for Leeds Rhinos during his 16-year career. His efforts in fundraising led to the establishment of a specialized MND center in Leeds named in his honor.
Speaking about coping with the loss, Lindsey shared, “Navigating grief involves good and bad days, but my focus is on the children who keep me occupied and bring joy to my life. They are my priority and motivation.”
Lindsey previously mentioned her preparation for discussing Rob’s illness and supporting their children through it. Despite the challenges, she found solace in the family’s unity during Rob’s final moments.
Before his passing, Rob recorded a video urging people to cherish every moment and remain courageous in the face of adversity. He left messages for his children to be cherished at significant milestones in their lives, expressing hope for a cure for MND.
