The Met Office is forecasting a significant increase in heatwave temperatures to reach up to 35C on Monday and Tuesday, with cooler conditions expected shortly after. Today is anticipated to be the hottest day of the year so far, potentially breaking yesterday’s record. Monday is set to break this record again and may even mark the hottest day in May on record.
Following these high temperatures, Tuesday will see similar highs, with peak temperatures expected to reach 30C in southern regions on Wednesday and 28C on Thursday. Nonetheless, weather models indicate a return to colder conditions in the near future.
According to the ECMWF model, temperatures could struggle to surpass 10C in various parts of the UK on June 3, with morning temperatures potentially dropping to 0C in certain areas of Scotland. Minimum temperature readings suggest that eastern, central, and southern England, along with South Wales, might be the only regions with double-digit temperatures at 6am.
Temperature anomaly maps for early June reveal widespread areas of deep blue across the UK, indicating temperatures are likely to fall well below the average for this time of year. The Met Office’s forecast of 35C for Monday and Tuesday would establish a new May temperature record, surpassing the current record of 32.8C.
Temperatures exceeded 28C on Friday and are projected to remain above this mark until at least Thursday, potentially leading to a prolonged heatwave. An official heatwave is declared when temperatures exceed the threshold for three consecutive days, which ranges from 25C to 28C across different UK counties.
The Met Office’s forecast for Monday describes cloudy conditions in northwest Scotland with intermittent rain, while most other areas can expect plenty of sunshine. It will remain hot, particularly in the south, but cooler along the coastlines. For Tuesday to Thursday, the forecast predicts continued hot, sunny, and mostly dry weather with temperatures well above average, possibly with some patchy clouds and occasional showers by Thursday.
