A man’s body was found nearly a month after he passed away in a well-known vacation destination following complaints from neighbors about a strong smell.
The 79-year-old individual was discovered in a seaside residence in Puerto Andratx, Majorca on a Wednesday when firefighters accessed his balcony with a ladder and broke through the glass door. Concerns were raised by neighbors who detected an unusual odor emanating from the apartment. Furthermore, the man’s landlord became alarmed when the man ceased responding to communication attempts and did not answer the door.
A gathering of tourists and locals assembled outside to witness emergency personnel entering the secured apartment. Following the entry of firefighters, the discovery of a deceased person was swiftly confirmed.
The man, originally from Germany but a long-time resident of the area, is presumed to have died from natural causes. The landlord mentioned to local media that the man resided alone and was consistently punctual with bill payments, making the sudden lack of communication unusual.
In April 2026, a British expatriate couple was found inside a rural property in Cala Mesquida, Majorca after missing a planned boat outing. Emergency responders found the man deceased and his wife in critical condition, with investigations indicating carbon monoxide poisoning from a malfunctioning appliance.
This incident is not an isolated case, as numerous elderly or solitary expatriates living in tourist areas with limited local connections can go unnoticed for several days or even weeks before being discovered. For instance, in February of the previous year, two vulnerable British retirees were found deceased in their residence in San Fulgencio, a town south of Alicante popular among UK expats residing in Spain.
The couple’s failure to answer calls prompted concerns, and a passerby peering through a window noticed a body part on the floor. Civil Guard officers found both individuals deceased inside. Local social services had categorized the couple as “vulnerable” due to severe chronic illnesses, and forensic examinations later revealed that they had remained undiscovered for days. Post-mortem results showed no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. The couple’s identities were not disclosed by Spanish authorities.
Similarly, in that same month, a 90-year-old British pensioner reportedly passed away due to starvation in her residence after her 63-year-old son, who was her caregiver, died of natural causes. Police entered the property after unanswered knocks, discovering both bodies inside.
