A tragic incident occurred as a young boy lost his life in a river after becoming trapped between rocks, according to findings from an inquest. Khaled Basem Al Satouf, aged 12, drowned in the River Swale at Richmond Falls in North Yorkshire. Witnesses reported that the boy had been playing around before his family raised alarm on a nearby pebble beach.
Khaled’s lifeless body was discovered submerged about 12 feet beneath the river’s surface, wedged between two rocks. The assistant coroner for North Yorkshire, Alison Norton, confirmed the cause of death as accidental drowning. The incident took place on August 16, with Khaled, from Leeds, accompanied by six family members.
Witnesses described a scene of people enjoying themselves in the water that day. Paul Norton, a witness, recounted observing Khaled having fun in the water up to his neck, with no immediate concerns for his safety. However, within moments, screams were heard, and the boy had vanished.
A child witness, who remained unnamed, shared a heartbreaking account of being in the water with Khaled when he disappeared. She mentioned that she initially thought he was joking but soon realized the severity of the situation as he struggled in the water.
Despite prompt action by the North Yorkshire Police, Khaled’s body was not recovered until later that evening, with no signs of foul play noted. The authorities concluded that the incident was a tragic accident with no suspicious circumstances involved.
